About the Workshop

This comprehensive training course provides mental health professionals, counselors, and students with a deep dive into the principles and practice of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT). Rooted in the humanistic approach pioneered by Virginia Axline and grounded in the work of Carl Rogers, CCPT emphasizes the healing power of the therapeutic relationship and the innate capacity of children to move toward wellness through play. Participants will explore the theoretical foundations of CCPT, gain practical skills for implementing non-directive play therapy techniques, and learn to create a safe, empathetic, and accepting environment where children can express themselves freely. The course includes experiential activities, video demonstrations, and case studies to enhance understanding and application of the model.

Objectives

  1. Explain the theoretical underpinnings of Child-Centered Play Therapy, including its roots in person-centered theory and developmental psychology.

  2. Identify the core principles and therapeutic attitudes essential to the practice of CCPT

  3. Demonstrate at least 3 foundational CCPT skills, including reflective listening, limit setting (ACT model), and tracking

  4. Differentiate at least 3 ways CCPT differs from other play therapy approaches.

  5. Analyze and respond to children’s play themes as a way of understanding their emotional needs and developmental stage.

  6. Analyze at least 1 case study through a CCPT lens
